Important Tips to Properly Collecting your COVID-19 Sample (US Edition)

Thank you for choosing binx health for your COVID-19 testing needs! Read on for some important pointers to properly collect your COVID-19 sample. Properly collecting a sample is important, because if you do not properly collect your sample, it could be rejected by the lab and delay your ability to get your test result.

If you have already received your sample collection kit, please refer to the Instructions included in your kit.

1. Before You Collect Your Sample:

Order your COVID-19 sample collection kit: To order your kit, you can go to mybinxhealth.com/covid and scroll to the bottom of the webpage and select “request a test” and click on your cart. After filling out a questionnaire, you may then place an order for a kit. Please note that you may order one test per unique binx account.

If you are testing through an employer or university program, your process will look a little different. Your testing and pickup location may vary, so please contact your administration for more specific information on where and when to test.

Important Reminders! Once your COVID-19 sample collection kit has arrived, please review the following reminders to ensure that your sample is shipped out on time and viable for laboratory analysis.

  • You must collect your sample and ship or drop off your kit on the same day.
  • Before collecting your sample, make sure to check when the last UPS pick-up of the day is. If you are returning your sample to a centralized drop-off for delivery to the lab, confirm pick-up time with your institution.
  • Samples should only be collected Monday through Friday
  • If you are testing with the saliva collection kit, please ensure that you do not eat, drink, or smoke 30 minutes before you provide your sample.
  • Be sure to carefully open your kit. Do not tear the package. You will need it to return your

sample.

2. Activate your test

Sign up or log into your binx account at www.mybinxhealth.com/activate.

Scan the QR code on the 1, 2, 3 card to easily activate your test. Or, find the activation code on the sample identification label (nasal swab collection) OR saliva tube and fill in the code where indicated to activate your kit. If you are part of a k-12 school program, your test might be activated for you.

If you do not activate your sample collection kit at mybinxhealth.com/activate, you will not receive your results! Please check that you have received a verification email for your kit activation before you collect your sample. Contact support at support@mybinxhealth.com if you do not receive this email.

Complete sample identification form

Fill out your sample identification label (if you are testing with nasal swab) OR lab requisition form (if you are testing with saliva) with your personal information, including your name, birthdate, time of testing, and time zone. If you are using the nasal test, please peel off the label’s backing once filled out and attach it to the sample selection tube lengthwise. If you are filling out the lab requisition form for saliva testing, please ensure that the form is shipped back to lab with your sample.

3. Collect Your Sample

When collecting your sample, please ensure that you carefully and fully follow the instructions included in your kit. The sample collection process is non-invasive and easy to use. If you are experiencing any discomfort, please reach out to support@mybinxhealth.com.

Sample must be collected with adult assistance for 5-13 year olds and self-collected under adult supervirsion for 14-17 year olds. Individuals 18+ can self-collect their own samples without any supervision.

How to collect your nasal sample
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds
  2. Remove the sterile swab from the tube (Important: do not touch the swab tip)
  3. Carefully pick up and slowly insert the swab approximately ½ inch /1 cm into one nostril. Do not force the swab into your nose any further. Firmly sample the nasal membrane by rotating the swab 2-3 times then leave in place for 10 to 15 seconds. Gently remove the swab
  4. Repeat this process using the same swab for the other nostril. It is important to collect your sample from both nostrils
  5. Without touching the swab tip, place the swab (tip first) into the swab tube and close the tube tightly
  6. Place completed sample into the biohazard bags. Do not remove desiccant pouch.
How to collect your saliva sample
  1. Do not eat, drink, or smoke at least up to 30 minutes prior to sample collection and fill up the tube to the line with saliva, excluding bubbles
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds
  3. Spit into the saliva collection device until the fill line is reached, excluding the bubbles
  4. Close the lid securely and unscrew the funnel lid on the saliva sample collection tube to discard
  5. Screw on cap tightly
  6. Place completed sample into the biohazard bags. Do not remove desiccant pouch.

4. Shipping Your Sample

Make sure you package up the kit according to the provided instructions.

If you are testing individually, please return your sample to a local UPS drop-off for return shipping to one of our partner labs. Please ensure that you drop off your sample that same day that you test.

If you are performing bulk testing with binx through your university or employer, it is possible that you may be able to drop off your sample at a centralized shipping location rather than individually at a drop-off. Your results should arrive within 24-48 hours of lab receipt. If you test positive for COVID-19, a licensed medical professional will reach out to determine next steps and answer any questions you may have.
