The Position

The Microbiologist will work within a team of R&D scientists and engineers in a quick-moving, diverse and proactive environment to assist in the development of new tests for our novel and proprietary point of care diagnostic platform. This role will play a key part in contributing to the further development of a range of applications and assays on our unique io platform that is a world-first in molecular diagnostics providing laboratory-quality results in 30 minutes. This exciting opportunity will expand the menu of tests that help patients receive a quick diagnosis when they need it and clinicians to truly operate a test and treat environment. The Microbiologist will join a project team within the wider Research & Development group, that carries out the design, development, and optimization of nucleic acid tests onto system prototypes, prior to full integration onto binx’ diagnostic platform. This role will maintain the range of microbial stocks in our Biosafety Level II laboratory, ensuring stock viability and availability to support the development and validation/verification activities.


  • Management of a biosafety level II laboratory
  • Maintain the biosafety and H&S compliance standards of the Microbiology laboratory
  • Undertake the culturing of a range of microorganisms, focusing mainly on bacteria and fungi
  • Carry out experimentation that supports the development of new IVD devices
  • Manage the stock volume and viability for a range of microorganisms ensuring availability and usable concentrations to defined timelines
  • Assist in the design & development of system-based nucleic acid assays
  • Advise on and analyse complex data sets including statistical analysis
  • High quality execution of laboratory experiments
  • Optimisation of laboratory methodology and processes to meet strict experimental specification
  • Compose well-structured experimental plans
  • Clear laboratory report writing & clear concise presentation of results
  • Research and development, testing and validation of performance of assay protocols
  • Adhere with and contribute to the Quality Management System

Education, Experience, and Demonstrated Skills

  • BSc or First Degree in a relevant technical discipline
  • Masters/Ph.D in a relevant technical discipline is preferred
  • Experience managing a biosafety level II laboratory
  • 3+ years of microbiological or immunological experience, ideally in disease diagnostics or an R&D environment
  • Understanding of a range of microbiological procedures including isolation, quantitation, and identification etc.
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams and across technical disciplines to achieve deadlines
  • Experience in the culturing, isolation, and speciation of a range of organisms including bacteria and fungi
  • Experience in, or broad theoretical understanding of regulatory and quality standards e.g. ISO standards, UKAS accreditation etc.
  • Experimental design, data analysis & applied problem solving
  • Experience with biosafety level II microorganisms
  • Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills to deliver key messages across the business
  • High level of organizational skills and ability to manage dependencies between projects
  • Ability to manage stock levels of a range of reagents, consumables and stock
  • Working within a team to achieve company goals

Of particular interest would be experienced with the following:

  • Clinical microbiology experience.
  • Molecular biological techniques such as PCR and qPCR
  • Nucleic acid extraction protocols from various microbial cultures
  • Experience working to GMP / GLP or a similarly regulated environment
  • Biosafety Practitioner Qualified
  • Prior knowledge/experience developing, validating, and verifying diagnostic products
  • Prior experience generating high-quality and insightful data and information for presentation to the wider R&D team
